Catedral (LA)
Plaza Obispo Eguino, s/n
Santander, 39002

La Catedral has long been considered the most important religious monument in Santander. Construction of the edifice began in the 14th century and three naves are said to be Gothic in style. Rebuilding has been done over the years especially in the 17th century and after the big fire in 1941.

The altar pieces in the cathedral's interior catches one’s attention as do some of the tombs like that built for Marcelino Menéndez Pelayo. The 15th century cloister runs along the southern wall and gives access to the interior. Rectangular in shape, its pointed arches are framed within half-pointed arcs.

Admission is free with guided tours available during the summer months. Mass is at 5pm and 8pm Mon-Sat; 8.15am, 10am, 11am, 12.30pm, 1.30pm, 5pm and 8pm Sun; visits during Mass are not allowed. Open Hours: 10am - 1pm and 4- 7:30pm Mon-Fri; 10am - 1pm and 4 - 8:45pm Sat and Sun

The Crypt or Church of Santísimo Cristo (Most Holy Christ) is the oldest preserved building in Santander that is located under the cathedral. Work on the structure started in the 13th century.

The interior has low ceilings only 4 meters high and inside space measures 31 by 18.5 meters. There are three naves and archaeological excavations unveil evidence of Roman occupation and the San Emeterio and San Celedonio Abbey. These excavations were covered over, but the use of glass flooring enables persons to still see through to the older structures underneath the existing building.

One of three surviving religious buildings in Santander along with the cathedral and Cripta del Cristo which has a well-defined architectural design. Locally known as La Compañía, in reference to the Compañía de Jesús (or Jesuits), the church is found beside Plaza Porticada.

Construction work began in the 18th century and the building consists of three segments, the middle section being the most impressive. The second floor is occupied by a rectangular window flanked by the coat of arms of the first Marquis of Villapuente, who provided the funds for the completion of the building.

Iglesia de las Salesas Reales
Avenida de Camilo Alonso Vega, 13
Santander, 39007
Tel: +34 942 336690

This church provides another example of the neo-Gothic religious architecture typical in the city between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.

From the outside, the church looks more like a civic building, with its elaborate ornamentation reminiscent of Renaissance architecture. The ground level has five facades and overhead, paired windows with a fretwork balustrade and pinnacles. The tower’s spire has neo-Gothic design elements to it. Masses are conducted at 10:30 a.m. Sunday with visits allowed during mass only.
Ermita de la Virgen del Mar
San Román
Santander, 39012

The hermitage is located in an island six kilometers outside Santander, joined to the mainland by a foot bridge. This simple building was constructed in the 17th century to house the statue of Nuestra Señora del Mar (Our Lady of the Sea), the city's patron saint.

Celebrations mark the Virgin's feast day which falls on the first Monday after Pentecost (which is in the second half of May or the first half of June). Legend has it that in 1597, the citizens promised to honor the Virgin in an annual pilgrimage to the hermitage if she delivered them from the plague that was then prevalent in Santander.

Mass there is held at 7:00 pm Sunday and the hermitage opens only for mass and annual celebrations.

Seminario del Monte Corbán
San Román
Santander, 39012
Tel: +34 942 332600

Built in 1407 by the order of Saint Jerome, the seminary is located four kilometers outside the city and has two cloisters. The first known as the Patio Pequeño or small courtyard typifies Renaissance architecture with two stories of half-rounded arches, six on each side. The larger cloister built in the 18th century stands four stories high and is done in the baroque style. The church itself has a single nave and a tracework vaulted ceiling. Mass is officiated at 9:00 am Sunday and visits are allowed only during mass. Bus information: +34 942 221 685
Iglesia de Santa Lucía
Daoíz y Velarde, 11
Santander, 39003
Tel: +34 942 211723

Considered one of Santander's best-loved churches, the Iglesia de Santa Lucia is located in the well-known Plaza de Cañadío, also a popular spot for an evening drink. Its impressive neo-baroque structure was built in the middle of 19th century.

Its main altar is made entirely of Carrara marble by Calegari, while the statue of Santa Lucía (patron saint of the blind) was done by Daniel Alegre. The statue of Our Lady of Victories was completed by Bellver.

A stone and bronze sculpture dedicated to Cardinal Herrera Oria was recently erected in the small square which lies west of the church. Mass is officiated at midday and 8 p.m. Monday to Saturday; 8am, 9am, 10am, 11am, midday, 1pm and 6.45 p.m. on Sundays. Visits are allowed during mass only.
