The Santander travel guide

Welcome to the beautiful city of Santander!

Are you dreaming of an idyllic combination of sea and mountain for your next holidays?

Stop dreaming and have a look on our website! Santander Travel Guide will help you to make your dream come true!

Santander , the capital city of Cantabria, is located on the northern coast of Spain, between Asturias and the Basque Country overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. Under the rule of the Roman Empire it was known as Portus Victoriae Iuliobrigensium but its current name comes from a 3 rd century martyr called Saint Emeterio . During the second half of the 19 th century Santander became the home of a magnificent coastal resort, El Sardinero , which was well known among the Spanish upper class. Today it welcomes everyone! Its wonderful beach together with the promenade and the Magdalena Peninsula are some of the main attractions for tourists.

Beautiful and quiet Santander is surrounded by amazing scenery and lined by 11 sandy and extremely clean beaches where you can catch some sunrays or relax on their crystal clear waters. There are a lot of things to do! Santander perfectly suits everybody s taste since it offers a wide range of leisure activities such as museums , parks , theatres , excursions and sports .

When visiting Santander you can't also miss some of the nearby towns along the popular Pilgrim Route to Santiago de Compostela such as Comillas , Castro Urdiales , Santoña , Suances and San Vicente de la Barquera . However, if you prefer a close contact with nature, you should go and see the natural parks of Saja-Besaya , Oyambre and Peña Cabarga or simply explore the many picturesque spots in Picos de Europa .

No matter where you come from, you can travel to Santander by land, sea and air! The city is easily reached thanks to suitable national road and rail infrastructures as well as to the new international airlines connections. What is more, you can catch a ferry to Santander!

Visit the Santander photo gallery and start discovering the beautiful attractions of this Spain's gorgeous city!
